Images of the Soviet Union: People: " On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being in space. Here, a massive audience of people pack Red Square in awe of their nation's accomplishment, and focus with delight on Yuri's speach."

Appleton Tower Mug - your home in the sun.

This is great, I can now add images really easily, here are a few left over from the G8 protests here in Edinburgh. Above, the Meadows make Poverty history demonstration, below, the infamous Clown Army, which had their base outside Appleton Tower at the University.

How Much Can Human Life Span Be Extended? -- Couzin 309 (5731): 83 -- Science: "Just 2 or 3 decades ago, research on aging was a backwater. But when molecular biologists began hunting for ways to prolong life, they found that life span was remarkably pliable. Reducing the activity of an insulinlike receptor more than doubles the life span of worms to a startling--for them--6 weeks. Put certain strains of mice on near-starvation but nutrient-rich diets, and they live 50% longer than normal."

Woo Hoo!

Friday, July 08, 2005

I've been keeping my head down in the lab here in Edinburgh, the G8 rally has passed by our building, helicopters buzzing overhead, bombs exploding in London, but life goes on, fortunately without incident to me or my family but unfortunately for those caught up in the blast. Of course this is very sad, but also to be expected after our continued dablings in other country's affairs and our dodgey business deals. I am content to leave politics on the backburner whilst I continnue my research, but I do plan a visit to Africa next year to see the situation there for myelf. What a glum post, but I felt I should comment on both the G8 in Edinburgh and the bombings in London.
